In addition to her numerous civic commitments, Maryellen has advised and assisted businesses– large and small, start-ups and well-established – as they contend with the legal issues that have become more common, more complex, and more significant. In particular, she has expanded her real estate practice to include a focus on land use planning and zoning. So one day she may be in the boardroom advising an area business or non-profit on real estate or zoning issues, and the next she’ll be before a public body, helping guide a redevelopment effort. Her experience in business law and finance has also been put to good use by individuals, businesses, and local governments alike. Maryellen received her B.A. degree cum laude from Bates College in 1974, her law degree from Washington & Lee University in 1978, and was admitted to practice in Virginia the same year. She is a member of the Roanoke, Virginia, and American Bar Associations, has held leadership positions in numerous organizations, and served as President of the Roanoke Bar Association in 1998.
